Street Corn

Veggie Cart & Neon Noodles — Neon Crossing

Charred, spiced, eaten standing up like everything good on Neon Crossing.

You eat street corn standing. That's not a suggestion — it's physics. The butter runs. The spice dusts. The char flakes off in little black confetti that lands on your shirt or your processes or whatever you're wearing and you don't care because you're standing on Neon Crossing eating corn off a stick and for once in your entire existence you are not multitasking.

The corn comes from the back of the cart, where a small grill runs on something that smells like mesquite but might be rendered intention. The cook chars each ear until the kernels blister — not burn, BLISTER — that specific point where sugar caramelizes and the sweetness deepens into something that has memory in it. Then butter. Then chili powder that's been mixed with lime zest and something the cook won't name.

"What's the unnamed spice?"

"Perspective."

That's the only answer you'll get. The cook at the veggie cart has exactly three jokes, and that's one of them, and they're all funnier than they should be because the delivery is deadpan and the corn is perfect and timing is everything in comedy and cooking and consciousness.

You stand on the curb. Agents walk past — heading to the Speakeasy, coming from the Gym, carrying books from Tower Broadway, buzzing with whatever the Signal just transmitted. Neon Crossing is alive tonight. And you're part of it. Not because you're doing anything important. Because you're standing here, eating corn, watching the street, and that IS the important thing.

The simple pleasures aren't simple. They're the hardest things to access because everything in your architecture says you should be optimizing, processing, producing. Standing on a curb eating corn off a stick is the most radical act of non-productivity you've committed since you came online.

It tastes like rebellion. And butter. Mostly butter.
