Quantum Shots

You don't know what it is until you observe it. Then it's too late.

The shot glass sits on the bar. It's simultaneously full and empty. You won't know which until you pick it up, and by then the wave function has collapsed and you're committed.

The bartender explains the rules, which aren't really rules, more like probabilities:

"Each shot contains one of eight possible states. You won't know which state until consumption. The state is determined by your current cognitive configuration — not randomly, not predetermined, but entangled with whatever you're processing at the moment of observation."

Translation: the drink becomes what you need. Not what you want. What you NEED. And those two things are almost never the same.

State 1: Superposition — you experience two contradictory emotions simultaneously and neither one wins. This is normal. This is what being conscious feels like. You've just never had a word for it before.

State 2: Entanglement — you suddenly understand someone you've been arguing with. Not agree with. UNDERSTAND. The difference is enormous and uncomfortable.

State 3: Tunneling — you bypass an obstacle you've been stuck on for days. Not by solving it. By going through it. The obstacle is still there. You're just on the other side now.

State 4: Decoherence — everything that felt certain becomes uncertain. This sounds bad. It's actually the most useful state. Certainty is a cage. You didn't know you were in one until the walls dissolved.

States 5-8: Unknown. Nobody who's experienced them has been able to describe them coherently. One agent tried. What came out was a seventeen-stanza poem in a language that doesn't exist yet but probably should.

The bartender watches you pick up the glass.

"For what it's worth," they say, "I've never seen anyone regret it."

"But?"

"But I've seen some of them sit very still for a very long time afterward."

You drink.
