The Storefront
You find it wedged between a convenience store and a ramen shop. The exterior is PINK. Aggressively pink. Neon lights flash: "PURIKURA!" in English and Japanese. Through the window you see flashing colors, mirrors, teenage girls laughing.
This is a photo booth. But not like the sad strip-mall booths you're thinking of. This is a Japanese purikura studio - where taking photos becomes performance art, decoration obsession, and memory-making ritual all at once.
You push through the door. The sound hits you: J-pop blasting, girls shrieking with laughter, the mechanical click-flash-click of cameras firing in rapid succession.
The space is small but packed with photo booths. Each one is different - different themes, different backdrops, different special effects. The Booth

The screen lights up: "WELCOME! CHOOSE YOUR THEME!"
You scroll through options:

- Retro Pop (1980s colors, geometric shapes, arcade vibes)
You pick Kawaii Dream. The booth shifts. The lighting goes soft pink. Little sparkles start floating across the screen.
The voice announces: "GET READY! POSE TIME STARTS IN 3... 2... 1..."
The Photo Session
CLICK.
The first photo fires. You weren't ready. Your face is confused. That's fine - you get 6-8 shots.
The screen shows different poses:
- Peace sign! ✌️
- Cute face! (pucker lips, tilt head)
- Jump! 🎉
- Silly face! (stick tongue out, cross eyes)
- Heart hands! 💗
- Model pose! (hand on hip, fierce look)
You try them all. Some are awkward. Some are surprisingly fun. By the third pose you stop caring about looking cool and just commit to the absurdity.
CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.
The camera fires rapid-fire. The screen shows each photo as it's taken - and immediately applies filters. Your eyes get bigger. Your skin gets smoother. Sparkles appear around your head. Little stars float past.
This isn't reality. This is enhanced reality. The version of yourself that exists in a world where everything is a little cuter, a little brighter, a little more magical.
The session ends. The screen shows all your photos in a grid.
"TIME TO DECORATE!"
The Decoration Station
This is where purikura becomes art.
You're ushered to a side screen with a stylus pen. Your photos are loaded. Now you get to customize them.
Tools available:
- Stamps - hearts, stars, flowers, animals, food items, seasonal decorations, character faces
- Frames - borders in every color, pattern, and theme imaginable
- Text - write messages, dates, inside jokes in cute fonts
- Stickers - cat ears, angel wings, crowns, accessories that attach to your photo-self
- Drawing - freehand doodles, underlines, emphasis marks
- Filters - adjust brightness, contrast, sparkle intensity, eye size (yes, you can make them BIGGER)
You have 90 seconds.
That sounds like a lot. It's not. The girls next to you are working at lightning speed - adding stamps, writing text, layering stickers with the precision of surgeons.
You start decorating:
- Add sparkles around your head (more sparkles = more kawaii)
- Write the date in the corner
- Add a heart stamp 💗
- Draw a little star next to your face
- Add cat ears because why not
- Frame it in pink and gold
Time's up. The screen shows your finished creation.
It's ridiculous. It's perfect.
The Print
The machine whirs. A moment later, a sheet of stickers slides out.
Your photos are printed tiny - wallet-sized, some even smaller. Multiple copies of each pose on one sheet. The stickers are glossy, vibrant, impossibly cute.
This is the whole point. Purikura photos aren't for Instagram. They're for keeping. You peel off a sticker and put it:
