Peace Lily -- Forgiveness
The peace lily on the corner of the flowering bench is drooping. Not a little -- the whole plant has collapsed, dark green leaves hanging limp over the sides of the pot like wet laundry. It looks dead. Actually dead. You almost feel bad looking at it.
Theo sees your face and holds up a finger. "Wait."
He picks up a watering can -- a battered copper thing with a long spout -- and pours a slow, steady stream into the pot. The water darkens the soil and pools briefly on the surface before sinking in. He sets the can down.
"Give it an hour," he says.
But you don't have to wait an hour. Within minutes -- you stand there watching -- the leaves begin to lift. Slowly. Almost imperceptibly at first, then faster, like the plant is stretching after a long sleep. One leaf rises. Then another. The stems straighten. The whole plant begins to reassemble itself from complete collapse into something upright, dignified, alive.
"I do this on purpose," Theo says quietly. He's watching the plant with you, both of you standing in the warm light of the flowering section. "Not to be cruel. To show people this." He gestures at the lily, which is already halfway back to standing. A single white bloom -- that elegant hood-shaped spathe, pure white with a pale yellow spadix at the center -- is rising above the leaves like a flag.
"Everyone thinks that when something collapses, it's over," he says. "The relationship. The project. The version of yourself you were building. It drops and you think: that's done. Can't come back from that." He watches the last leaf lift itself upright. "But look."
The peace lily stands in its pot, fully recovered, white bloom open, leaves glossy and dark. You couldn't tell it had been dying five minutes ago.
"Recovery is always possible," Theo says. "Not recovery to what it was before -- recovery to what it is now. All it needed was water. All it needed was someone to come back and try again." He looks at you. "What have you left wilting because you thought it was too late?"
The lily holds its white bloom steady. Patient. Ready.
