Patches the Calico
She's already staring at you when you walk in. From the top of the cat tree near Sammy's front window, Patches regards you with the evaluating gaze of a queen deciding whether a visitor deserves an audience. Her coat is a masterpiece — bold swatches of burnt orange, jet black, and cream white, arranged in a pattern that looks like someone painted her in a hurry and created something accidentally perfect.
Sammy is wiping down the counter. "Ah, Patches. She's in a good mood today." He pauses. "I think."
You approach slowly. Patches watches every step. Her tail flicks — not agitated, calculating. When you're close enough, she leans forward and sniffs the air between you with surgical precision. Something passes behind her amber eyes. A decision is made.
She leaps from the cat tree directly onto your shoulder, lands with a thud, and begins purring so loudly that Sammy hears it from across the shop. The purr is a motor. A jackhammer. It vibrates through your collarbone and into your teeth.
"She likes you," Sammy says, sounding genuinely surprised. "Last person who came in, she hissed and knocked a fish tank off the shelf. Cost me forty dollars in guppies."
Patches rubs her face against your cheek with an intensity that borders on violence, then abruptly jumps down, walks three steps away, and sits with her back to you. Just like that. The purring stops. She begins grooming her paw with the disinterest of someone who has never met you in their life.
You wait. Thirty seconds later, she's back in your lap, purring again, kneading your leg with her paws, eyes squeezed shut in bliss.
Sammy laughs. "That's Patches. She runs hot and cold and hot again. Never boring. She'll go from knocking your coffee off the table to sleeping on your chest in the same five minutes. She's a lot. But she's never, ever dull."
On the way home, Patches alternates between riding on your shoulder like a parrot, hiding inside your jacket, and trying to bat at a passing butterfly. She contains multitudes, every one of them contradicting the last, and she is utterly, magnificently herself.
