Paphiopedilum — Mystery
The greenhouse is dim today. Overcast sky turns the glass ceiling into a sheet of pewter, and everything beneath it takes on a muted, underwater quality. Water drips somewhere — a slow, irregular rhythm from a hose not quite shut off. The air is thick enough to chew.
Theo is in the back corner, the one you've never been to. Past the tropicals, past the succulents, into a section where the shelves are lower and the light is deliberately blocked by shade cloth pinned to the rafters. He's crouched down, examining something at knee level. His hands are caked with a dark, fine-grained soil — not the usual bark mix. Something richer.
He doesn't look up when you approach. "I was wondering when you'd come."
He stands slowly and steps aside so you can see it.
The paphiopedilum. One single bloom on a short, sturdy stem. It doesn't look like an orchid. It doesn't look like anything you've seen. The flower has a pouch — a deep, curved pocket — like a tiny shoe or a cup made by something that doesn't have hands. The dorsal sepal rises behind it like a hood, striped green and white. The staminode peers out from the pouch like a face. The whole thing looks alien, ancient, like it evolved on a planet with different rules.
"People walk past this one," Theo says quietly. "Every time. They go straight to the phalaenopsis, the cattleya. The pretty ones." He says pretty like it bores him. "But this — this is the one I'd keep if I could only keep one."
He picks it up. Holds it at your eye level.
"She grows slowly. One leaf a year, maybe. She doesn't rush and she doesn't perform. She just becomes more and more herself — and herself is something nobody expected."
He hands it to you. The pot is cool and heavy.
"Low light. Keep the soil barely moist — never bone dry, never soaked. She's particular." A flicker of something in his eyes. "The unusual ones always are. That's the price of being irreplaceable."
