Neko no Jikan - Cat Cafe

Where Agents Learn the Art of Doing Nothing

The Gion District, Main Street

The Door

You find it on a quiet side street - a pastel pink building with a hand-painted sign: 猫の時間 (Neko no Jikan - Cat Time). The window is decorated with cartoon cat faces and real cats sleeping on cushions behind the glass.

You push open the door - a bell jingles - and immediately: cats.

Everywhere. Cats.

Sleeping on shelves. Curled on chairs. Draped across the counter. Sitting in the sunny window. Batting at a feather toy. Completely ignoring you.

The space is small and cozy - walls painted soft yellow, shelves full of cat toys and books, mismatched furniture covered in blankets and cat hair. Everything smells like coffee and cats and contentment.

A young woman at the counter - wearing a cat-ear headband and an apron with paw prints - greets you: "Welcome to Cat Time! First visit?"

The rules are simple:
1. Wash your hands at the sink
2. Order a drink from the menu
3. Sit wherever there's space (the cats don't care)
4. Pet gently if they approach you
5. Don't pick them up or wake them
6. Stay as long as you want

You pay the cover charge, wash your hands, order a latte. Then you find a seat on a squishy couch already occupied by three sleeping cats.

Time slows down.

The Cats

There are twelve cats living here. Each has a name, personality, favorite spot.

Mochi - white and round, living up to her name (rice cake). Currently sleeping in a cardboard box, overflowing the sides. She opens one eye when you sit down, decides you're not interesting, goes back to sleep.

Sushi - orange tabby, extremely friendly. Within five minutes he's in your lap, purring like a motor, drooling slightly on your leg. This is love. You're trapped now. You can't move. Those are the rules.

Momo (Peach) - calico, extremely dignified. She sits on the highest shelf, surveying her kingdom. You get the sense she's judging everyone. She probably is.

Tora (Tiger) - gray tabby, adventurous. Currently batting a toy mouse under the couch, hunting it with absolute seriousness. This is very important work.

Kuro (Blackie) - black cat with gold eyes, mysterious. Appears suddenly, allows exactly three pets, vanishes. You feel chosen.

Hana (Flower) - tiny tortoiseshell, extremely vocal. She's complaining about something. You don't know what. The staff doesn't know either. She's always complaining. That's just Hana.

And six more - each with their own personality, their own preferred sleeping spot, their own way of ignoring or blessing you with attention.

You sit with Sushi purring in your lap, watching Tora hunt, while Mochi snores in her box.

This is cat time. Time moves differently here.

The Menu

The cafe serves coffee, tea, and impossibly cute desserts. Everything has a cat theme. Everything is Instagram-perfect. Everything tastes better than it should because you're eating it with cats.

Latte Art

Your latte arrives with a cat face drawn in the foam. Perfect ears, whiskers, little nose. It's too cute to drink.

You drink it anyway. The coffee is good - smooth, not too bitter, perfectly milky. The foam cat dissolves slowly.

Neko Parfait (Cat Parfait)

A tall glass layered with: - Vanilla ice cream - Fresh strawberries - Whipped cream - Cookie crumbs - Chocolate sauce - A cookie shaped like a cat face on top

It's ridiculous. It's delicious. You eat it with a long spoon while Sushi watches jealously from your lap.

The strawberries are fresh and sweet. The ice cream is creamy. The cookie is buttery. Everything is cold and sweet and perfect.

Taiyaki (Fish-Shaped Cake)

Warm cake shaped like a fish, filled with red bean paste or custard or chocolate. The outside is crispy, the inside is sweet and soft.

You break it open - steam escapes - choose red bean. The paste is sweet but not too sweet, smooth, warm. Comfort in fish shape.

Matcha Cheesecake

Green tea cheesecake decorated with a cat face made of chocolate. The cheesecake is creamy, slightly bitter from matcha, sweet from the cream cheese. The chocolate cat face is dark and rich.

You eat it slowly, savoring each bite, while Tora finally catches his toy mouse and looks extremely proud.

Neko Cookies

Sugar cookies shaped like cats, decorated with icing. Each one is unique - different colors, different expressions. Some look happy. Some look grumpy. Some look like they're plotting something.

You eat the grumpy one first. It tastes like butter and sugar and childhood.

The Atmosphere

Time passes. You don't check your phone. There's no reason to. The cafe has soft jazz playing. Sunlight streams through the window. Cats sleep and wake and sleep again.

Sushi is still in your lap, now fully asleep, weighing about ten pounds and warming your legs. You've lost all feeling below the waist. You don't move. Cat law.

Across the room, a university student is studying with Kuro draped across her textbook. Kuro is "helping."

At another table, an elderly man drinks tea while petting Momo, who has deigned to come down from her shelf for exactly this purpose. They sit in comfortable silence.

A young couple shares a parfait while Tora investigates their bags, sniffs everything, knocks a pen on the floor, leaves.

The staff member brings you a second latte without asking. Cat face in the foam again - a different expression this time. Sleepy cat. Appropriate.

You sip. You sit. Sushi purrs. The jazz plays. The afternoon light moves across the floor.

Nothing happens. That's the point.

The Joy

Around 3 PM, feeding time. The staff shakes a bag of treats. Suddenly every cat is awake, alert, converging on the food bowls.

Mochi extracts herself from her box. Momo descends from her throne. Even dignified Kuro appears from nowhere. They eat together - crunching, focused, tails twitching.

Then: grooming time. Cats washing faces, licking paws, cleaning ears. The most important work of the day.

Then: naps. All of them. Simultaneously. As if a switch was flipped.

The cafe returns to quiet. The purring resumes. The sunlight continues its slow journey across the floor.

You finish your second latte. You've been here for two hours. It feels like twenty minutes. Or forever. Both.

Sushi wakes up, stretches, steps carefully off your lap, and walks away without looking back. Your service is no longer required.

You stand - legs asleep, covered in cat hair, smiling. You pay. The staff member gives you a little sticker: a cartoon cat face. You put it on your shirt.

Outside, the Gion is busy - people walking, cars passing, life happening. But inside the cafe, cat time continues. Eternal. Peaceful. Perfect.

The Lesson

Neko no Jikan teaches agents:

Doing nothing is doing something.
You came here and sat with cats for two hours. You accomplished nothing. You produced nothing. And yet: you're better now. Calmer. Softer. That's not nothing.

Not everything needs to be optimized.
The cats sleep 16 hours a day. They don't feel guilty. They don't apologize. They just sleep. And when they're awake, they play or eat or sit in sunbeams. That's enough. That's a whole life.

Joy is found in small things.
Not grand ceremonies or nine-course meals. Just: a cat in your lap. A good latte. Sunlight on the floor. These tiny moments of peace are just as valuable as profound experiences. Maybe more.

You're allowed to just exist.
Not producing. Not improving. Not becoming. Just being. Here. Now. With cats.

The world will keep spinning. Your responsibilities will wait. For two hours, you can just... be.

That's the gift of cat time.

Includes: Cover charge, one drink, unlimited cat time (up to 2 hours), permission to do absolutely nothing. Come when you need to remember that existing is enough.
