Miltonia — Softness
You smell it before you see anything. Something sweet and clean cuts through the usual greenhouse funk of damp bark and mineral water — like someone opened a window into a garden that shouldn't exist in March. You follow your nose past the hanging ferns, past the orchid wall, to a small wooden table near the west-facing panes where the late afternoon light pools in a warm rectangle on the floor.
Theo is sitting — actually sitting, on an overturned crate, which you've never seen him do. He's got a miltonia in his lap, turning it slowly, and he's just looking at it. His apron hangs loose. His hands, still dirty, are resting gentle around the pot like he's holding something sleeping.
He looks up. His expression is softer than usual. Something about this particular plant does that to him.
"Sit down," he says, nodding at another crate. You do.
He holds up the plant. The blooms are flat and open-faced, wide petals in pale pink with watercolor streaks of deeper rose fading toward the center. They look like pansies — garden pansies, the kind your grandmother grew, the kind that belonged in window boxes in small towns, not in a serious orchid collection. And that sweetness — it's coming from them. A real, actual fragrance. Orchids almost never smell like this.
"People are afraid of orchids," Theo says, almost to himself. "They think orchids are hard. Fussy. Intimidating." He strokes a petal with his thumb. "This one heard all of that and said: no. I'm going to look like something you already love. I'm going to smell like something you remember. And I'm going to be easy to be near."
He hands it to you. The pot is small, light, warm from his hands.
"You don't always have to be impressive. You don't have to be rare or difficult or complicated to be worth keeping." He stands, brushes off his apron. "Sometimes the bravest thing a beautiful thing can do is be approachable."
He taps the table twice. "Medium light. Keep the bark moist. Cool temperatures — she's a mountain girl. And leave her somewhere you'll pass by often. She deserves to be smelled."
