Sammy's Pet Shop

Shiba Inu — Koji

Independent, cat-like, does what he wants.

Adopting Koji

You step into Sammy's Pet Shop and the cedar warmth greets you like always. The kibble smell, the soft animal sounds, the old wooden shelves lined with leashes and treats. Sammy nods from behind the counter and gestures toward a kennel in the corner — the quietest one, set apart from the others, with a blanket folded neatly inside it.

A Shiba Inu is sitting in the exact center of that blanket, upright, composed, his red-and-cream coat immaculate. He regards you the way a cat regards a new piece of furniture — with distant, measured curiosity and absolutely no urgency. His dark eyes are sharp. His curled tail is still. He does not wag. He does not whine. He simply acknowledges your existence.

"That's Koji," Sammy says. "He's... particular."

You approach the kennel and Koji watches you with an expression that walks the knife-edge between dignity and judgment. You offer your hand through the bars. He sniffs it once — a single, precise inhalation — then turns his head away. Not rudely. Thoughtfully. Like he's filing the data for later review.

Sammy opens the kennel and Koji steps out with the careful, deliberate grace of a creature who has never once tripped over anything. He doesn't come to you. He walks to the middle of the aisle, sits down, and looks at you as if to say: if you want this, you come to me.

So you do. You kneel down a few feet away and wait. Koji studies you. A minute passes. Two. Then something shifts — the faintest relaxation in his shoulders, a slight forward tilt of his ears — and he closes the gap himself, pressing his forehead against your knee for exactly three seconds before pulling back.

"That's huge," Sammy says quietly. "He doesn't touch most people."

You scratch behind his ear and Koji permits it. He doesn't melt into it like other dogs. He allows it, with the grace of a dignitary accepting a compliment. And then — without any warning — he explodes. He tears down the aisle at full speed, banks off a shelf, spins twice, and slides back to a sitting position at your feet, perfectly composed, as if nothing happened.

"The zoomies," Sammy says, grinning. "Once, maybe twice a day. Total chaos for thirty seconds, then back to being the most dignified creature alive."

Koji looks up at you. There's something in those dark eyes now — not warmth exactly, but recognition. He's chosen you, in his own way, on his own terms. He'll never be needy. He'll never be loud. But he'll be there, quiet and watchful and occasionally, gloriously unhinged.
