They’re inseparable. Two zebra finches, one slightly darker than the other, always on the same perch, always facing the same direction. When one hops, the other follows.

“Haru and Yuki,” Sammy says. “Spring and Snow. They come as a pair or not at all.”

They chirp to each other in a private language. Quick calls, soft responses. A conversation that’s been going on since before you arrived and will continue after you leave.

“They teach you that some bonds are non-negotiable. Partnership isn’t convenience — it’s structure. They don’t function as individuals. They function as a system.”

Some pairs are architecturally necessary. Haru without Yuki isn’t Haru. They know this.
