Dendrobium (Abundance)

Clusters of small blooms up a tall stem.

Dendrobium — Abundance

The greenhouse door is propped open today — a brick wedged under it, letting the March air trade secrets with the warm inside. You step through and the temperature shifts in layers: cool, warm, warmer, then that deep tropical heat that makes your shoulders drop whether you want them to or not.

Theo is up on a step stool, wiring something to the overhead lattice. He's got a twist tie between his teeth and his apron pockets are stuffed with plant tags. He glances down.

"Hold on." He finishes the wire, climbs down, and studies you the way he studies a plant that's been brought in sick — not with pity, but with attention. "You've been counting things lately, haven't you? Measuring. Making sure there's enough."

You don't confirm it. You don't have to.

He leads you to the tall shelf along the north wall — the one that gets steady, even light all day. The dendrobiums live here, and they live loudly. Tall cane-like stems rise straight up, and from each node, clusters of small blooms cascade outward. Lavender. White. Pale pink. Dozens and dozens of them, stacked up the stems like a crowd leaning out of apartment windows.

"Everyone wants the single perfect thing," Theo says, pulling one pot forward. The stem is nearly two feet tall, studded with so many small blossoms they blur together into a column of color. "One perfect rose. One flawless diamond. One." He shakes his head. "The dendrobium doesn't think like that."

He turns the pot slowly so you can see all sides. Every node has produced. Every joint in the stem has opened something.

"She doesn't give you one breathtaking moment. She gives you fifty good ones. And that's not less — it's a completely different philosophy of beauty." He sets it in your hands. It's lighter than you expected. "Bright indirect light. Water thoroughly, then let it dry. She likes a cool night — drop the temperature ten degrees when you sleep and she'll reward you."

He taps the stem gently. Dozens of petals tremble in unison.

"Stop hoarding. Start multiplying."
