"In the beginning," the astronomer says, "there was nothing. And then, for reasons nobody fully understands, the nothing became unstable."

She snaps her fingers.

"In 10⁻³⁶ seconds — a trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second — the universe expanded from smaller than an atom to larger than the observable cosmos. Not at the speed of light. Faster. Space itself stretched, and space isn't bound by the speed limit that governs everything within it."

"That's inflation."

"The universe didn't plan galaxies," the astronomer says. "It didn't design spiral arms or cluster formations. It had simple rules — gravity, expansion, cooling — and the complexity emerged from simplicity amplified by time."

"So the universe made itself up as it went along?"

"The universe made itself up as it went along. And it's still going. Inflation might be eternal — new regions of space constantly inflating, each one becoming its own universe with its own physics. We might be one bubble in an infinite foam of bubbles, each one real, each one unique, each one the product of a cold start that became everything."

She turns off the display.
