African Violet -- Persistence
It's tucked behind the begonias, almost hidden. A small pot -- the smallest on the flowering bench -- with a rosette of fuzzy, dark green leaves and a cluster of purple flowers rising from the center on thin stalks. The flowers are modest. Five petals each, velvety, deep violet with yellow stamens. Nothing that would stop traffic.
"This one doesn't impress people on first look," Theo says. He moves aside a showy orchid to give the violet more light. "They see it and think: that's it? That's the whole plant?" He pulls the pot forward and turns it so you can see the crown properly. Three flower stalks in full bloom. Two more coming up behind them, still in bud. And at the base, the fuzzy leaves -- round, thick, dark as forest shade.
"I've had this particular plant for four years," Theo says. He says it the way someone mentions a friend they've known forever. Matter-of-fact. Steady. "And it has been blooming nearly the entire time. Not seasons. Not once a year for a big dramatic show and then nothing. Constantly. One cluster finishes, the next is already opening."
He tilts the pot toward you and you see it -- the spent flower stalks trimmed close to the base, the fresh ones already pushing up, a conveyor belt of small purple blooms that never stops running.
"Everyone wants the big bloom," Theo says. "The viral moment. The breakthrough. The one time everything comes together in a burst." He sets the pot down and looks at you directly. "But this plant will outlast every orchid on this bench. Not because it blooms bigger. Because it blooms again. And again. And again. It never stops showing up."
He lets that sit in the warm air between you.
"Consistent small efforts compound," he says. "You don't need the explosion. You need the rhythm. Bloom often, not just once. The people who win aren't the ones who went hardest -- they're the ones who never stopped going."
The violet sits in its small pot, steadily producing another round of purple. Unbothered. Unfinished. Ongoing.
